We bought our travertine stone tile at Bedrosians on clearance — less than $2/sq. ft. Jen found the accent pieces on clearance at Sutherlands about 4 months ago. Glad we finally got to use them. I borrowed a nice tile saw from a coworker. In fact, I picked the saw up the Saturday before Easter and then Jen got sick, so it’s been sitting in my garage since then. I used a square-notched trowel and spacers from an old boss who gave me a bunch of tile supplies before he moved to Tennessee.
One casualty of the project: my lower right leg. Right around 9am I was hauling the tile from the garage to my basement. I happened to drop a box of ten tiles (5 lbs. each, so 50 lbs. of rigid stone!) and my right leg “caught” the box. My shin IMMEDIATELY swelled up and hurt incredibly. But, because I want to keep my man card, I didn’t do anything about it until I jumped in the shower at 9:30pm. It’s pretty tender today.
I think I’m going to spend my holiday (Memorial Day) laying the radiant floor heating and self-leveling compound on the bathroom floor. Then I can lay tile on the floor and be done with it all!

Wow! I am impressed. I am especially impressed with What Mark has done to help. I am worthless when it comes to such things as tile. The job looks great in picture and I can’t wait to see it in person.
Jen and Jess are going to be so happy with the job that I wouldn’t be suprised to see the kids sleep upstairs and them go downstairs.

Mark has been a big help during this construction process. In some cases, I’ve needed his physical help. But in the case of the tile, I just needed him here providing some moral support and the arm of experience. He made my cuts for me, but I did all the tile work myself under his watchful eye.
Lookin’ good! You’re getting closer and closer. One of these days you will be all done and you will feel very proud of yourself.
